Yay, Its Bridal Season!

I love bridal season! I know there are a lot of makeup and hair people that hate doing bridal, you couldn’t pay them enough to do a wedding. And truth be told when I first started in the industry I thought I would never do bridal, I thought I would only do things like film, tv etc. There was a sorta stigma about doing weddings, like “oh you only do bridal!” but when you are a freelancer sometimes you need to say yes to jobs that you thought you would never do.

But as I got more in the industry and got a few word of mouth weddings, I realized that I really like bridal. As I get more and more into bridal I am realizing how much more to it there is to do bridal, the shows you do, the photo shoots for magazines you do building your name in the industry.

Besides what’s not to like, you are usually only there for a few hours, you walk away with some great cash in your pocket and you got to see a beautiful woman on one of the happiest days of her life! (yes there is always the risk of getting a Bridezilla but from my experience those are so few and far between that it shouldn’t sour you against the whole industry all together!)

*As part of bridal season I have done a few bridal themed photo shoots, the above pic is a sneak peek from a shoot that I can actually show now! Makeup by Me, Hair by Candice Irons, Bridal accessories by Sparkle & Pomp

Knowing ones worth

How does one know their worth?

Being a freelancer I ask myself this question a lot, how much is my services worth? Basically asking how much I am worth, since I do these services. The beginning of the year is especially difficult to know your worth because work is so slow you are tempted to take anything even if you are taking a huge pay cut.

This issue came up a lot a few weeks ago when I got not 1 but 3 phone calls from brides looking for hair and makeup services for their weddings. Since the weddings were last month (slow month in the freelance world) I offered them a bit of a discount since they hummed and hawed at the original price. To my great annoyance even after I offered a reasonable discount they were still trying to get me to go lower. This makes me think how low can I go and still keep my professional integrity? Because it is a slow month should I go that low just to make some extra cash? But if I do that and they tell their friends will that come back to haunt me when those friends call wanting the same price but their wedding is smack dab in the middle of bridal season! And if I do go that low will I just be angry doing the job and end up regretting it? As we all know when you do a job and are regretting it you are not at the top of your game, which could ultimately ruin your reputation among that group of people.

This is where knowing you worth comes in and the ability to say no! Because even though it is a slow season and I can use the money I need to put my integrity and professional reputation first because in the long run a few extra dollars in the slow season is not worth ruining your name in the long run!

When bad extensions happen to good people!

Fergie Extensions

So normally I think Fergie looks pretty good, she is usually well put together with good hair and makeup. But this recent photo shows that even good people with money can get bad extensions! Those extensions are not only bad in the back, all scrunched up and not well blended. But its the front that [...]

Body painting alternative!

Hard Candy Swatched

A little about me….

I do the makeup and hair on an awesome webseries called “BJ Fletcher: Private Eye”, which is made by Bee Charmer Productions. As part of our last season there were a couple episodes called “Life on Fletcher” a sorta behind the scenes look at what it was like to make a webseries. And they very sweetly made [...]

Fillers!

The filler job, nobody likes to talk about them but they are a reality for most freelancers! What is a filler job you may ask? Well in the world of freelancing there are times when work slows down, mostly in the winter, at these times you need to have a little bit of an income [...]
